Things to Do in Cobh from a Cruise Ship

A few hours in Cobh? Here's how I'd spend them.

So your ship is pulling into Cobh. Lucky you! It's one of my favourite little towns in Ireland, and you really don't need a big plan to enjoy it. Here's how I'd spend the day, depending on how long you've got.

First, a little bit about Cobh

Cobh (you say it "Cove") sits on Cork Harbour, one of the biggest natural harbours in the world. It used to be called Queenstown, and it was the Titanic's last stop before she set off across the Atlantic in April 1912. For generations, it was also the last bit of Ireland millions of emigrants ever saw. So there's a lot of history packed into a very small, very colourful town.

Most ships dock right in the middle of town, so you can walk off and straight into it. Bigger ships sometimes dock across the harbour at Ringaskiddy instead, and from there you'll need transport, so check before you go.

If you only have a few hours

Stay in town and take it slow. Everything here is a short walk from the ship.

  • Titanic Experience Cobh. It's in the old White Star Line ticket office, the very building the last Titanic passengers walked through. You get the ticket of a real passenger and find out their story at the end. Book ahead, it sells out when there's a ship in.
  • Cobh Heritage Centre. The emigration story, told really well. If you have Irish roots, this one might get you.
  • Annie Moore and her brothers. Down by the water there's a statue of Annie, who left from here and became the very first person processed at Ellis Island in 1892.
  • The Lusitania Memorial. In Casement Square, remembering the ship sunk off the Cork coast in 1915. Many of the victims are buried locally.
  • St Colman's Cathedral. You can't miss it, it towers over the whole town. It's a steep walk up, but the view of the harbour from the top is worth every step.
  • The "Deck of Cards". The row of brightly coloured houses on the hill, with the cathedral behind them. This is the photo everyone takes, so you might as well take it too!

Then find a spot on the waterfront, get a coffee or a pint, and watch the harbour for a while. That's half the joy of Cobh.

If you have half a day

Add Spike Island. A short ferry from town takes you to an island that's been a monastery, a fortress and a prison over the last 1,300 years. It's fascinating, and the boat trip itself is lovely on a good day. Book in advance in summer.

If you have a full day

This is where you can get out and see a bit more of County Cork.

  • Cork city is only about 25 minutes away on the train, with the English Market, St Fin Barre's Cathedral and plenty of good food.
  • Blarney Castle, if kissing the stone is on your list.
  • Kinsale, a gorgeous harbour town and one of the best places for food in the country.
  • Fota Wildlife Park, just one stop from Cobh on the train, which is great if you have kids with you.

You can do some of this by train, but if you'd like to fit in a few places without watching the clock, a private driver makes it so much easier. That's exactly what we do with our shore excursions from Cobh. Your local driver-guide meets you at the ship, you choose what you'd like to see, and we always have you back at least an hour before your ship sails.

A few tips from me

  • Wear comfy shoes. Cobh is built on a hill, and some of those streets are steep!
  • Book the popular things early. The Titanic Experience and Spike Island both fill up on cruise days.
  • Bring a light rain jacket, even if it's sunny when you get off. It's Ireland, after all.
  • Keep an eye on the time. Allow plenty of time to get back to the ship, especially if there's more than one in port.

Quick answers

Can you walk around Cobh from the cruise ship? Yes. If your ship docks in Cobh town, most of the main sights are a 5 to 15 minute walk away.

How long do you need in Cobh? Two to four hours is enough for the town itself. With a full day, you can add Spike Island, Cork city, Blarney or Kinsale.

Can I book a private tour from Cobh? Yes. About Ireland Taxi Tours runs private shore excursions from Cobh and Ringaskiddy with local driver-guides, and we always have you back at least an hour before sailing.
